Rodney "Nick" and Rebecca "Ann" Tillman

Rodney "Nick" Tillman Obituary

Hot Springs, Ark., lost two community leaders on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, when a plane crash took the lives of Rodney "Nick" Tillman, age 49, and his wife, Rebecca "Ann" McCombs Tillman, age 42.
They are survived by their three beautiful daughters, Brittany Ann Tillman, 13, Madison Nickle Tillman, 12, and Alayna Davis Tillman, 8; Ann's parents, Rebecca and William McCombs; Nick's father, Rodney Tillman and his wife Martha Hixson Tillman, all of Hot Springs; Ann's grandmother, Jeannette Dunn of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Ann's brother, Jim McCombs and his wife Rosa of Colorado; Nick's brother, Davis Tillman and his wife Suellen of Hot Springs; his brother, Mark Tillman and Stockton Briggle of Los Angeles; stepbrothers, Walter and Bob Hixson; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins whom they treasured. Their circle of friends reaches far and wide.
Nick and Ann were preceded in death by Nick's mother, Ann Davis Tillman; and Ann's brother, Michael McCombs.
Nick was co-owner of Earthbound Trading Company, a retailer of clothes and jewelry based in Dallas, with over 70 stores nationwide. Nick was an entrepreneur whose local business included Three Monkeys and Statements. Ann was the owner of No Clothes, a store of urban accessories based in downtown Hot Springs. Nick and Ann met on a Caribbean cruise and were married in Hawaii on July 19, 1993.
They lived in Chicago and Washington, D.C., before moving to Hot Springs in 1995. Both were active in the Hot Springs community. Nick was involved in many community organizations and was a past president of Fifty for the Future. Ann most recently served as chairwoman of the 2008 Designer Vision House to benefit the First Step Foundation. In 2005, the couple, along with their daughters, served as honorary chairmen of Splash of Red, a gala benefiting Arkansas Children's Hospital. Both managed to juggle their busy careers and community activities while above all placing their family first.
Nick and Ann loved life and lived it to the fullest. They inspired others to do the same, and through their selfless, untiring efforts, touched lives around the world in many ways. They traveled the globe, most recently celebrating their 15th anniversary with a romantic visit to the Taj Mahal.
The memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. William (Bud) Reeves at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at United Methodist Church, 1100 Central Ave., Hot Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the families request memorials be made to the First Step Foundation, Heifer International, or a charity of your choice.
The McCombs and Tillman families want to express their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of pilot Greg Secrest, a close friend of Nick and Ann's, whose loss will be felt by all. Join us for a celebration of Nick and Ann's life

I´ll always remember Nick - vibrant, kind, outgoing and generous. I didn´t know Ann - met her once - but they clearly loved each other. I pray that their daughters are well and found comfort in their grief and loss.

Thinking of their tragic death still brings tears to my eyes, even 12 years later. I pray that they are happy together eternally and that their beautiful daughters are healthy and happy. Nick was my brother-in-law for about 7 years and generously employed me while I was between jobs for about a year during the time he was married to my sister. He was the nicest guy and deserved all the success he achieved - and Ann, who I met once and found her to bed delightful and beautiful - they were blissful together.

I was Nick's college roommate for three years. Nick and I never lost touch with one another. We had a very strong bond, even though we didn't see one another often. Our conversations, often several months apart, always seemed as if we had just been speaking to one another the day before. My heart is very heavy with this news. My deepest sympathies to the Tillman, McCombs, and Secrest families.

Our family lived across the street from Nick's in Potomac Maryland. Growing up with Nick was very special, he was like a brother to me. I was so happy to reconnect with Nick at our high school reunion. What a tragic loss, my heart and prayers go out to his family.

I knew Nick, Ann, and Greg... I looked up to Nick more than most others probably did. My dad wasn't around growing up and I looked at Nick like a Mentor. He widened my perspective on life, gave me pointers on business do and don'ts, and taught me to lighten up and have a little fun. He inspired me to have courage and pushed me out in the business world early. I am only 20 and because of Nick I have been to many States and even Mexico and the Bahammas when without someone like him I would not have. I am thankful for every thing he has taught me and he will forever inspire and give me courage to be the first to stand up and get the ball rolling. Thank You Nick Tillman and My Prays all with all of you.

He did make a difference.

Ann was one of my sorority sisters while we were at Huntingdon College. She was such a dear, sweet person, and a joy to be around. I don't think I ever saw her without that pretty smile on her face. I pray that the Lord will comfort Ann and Nick's three children, as well as the rest of the McCombs and Tillman families.

As my heart aches, I fondly remember Anne from High School. She had the most radiant smile that made her eyes squint with a sparkle. I havent seen her since the 80's but I feel as though a piece of my heart has been chipped away. There are no words.

I am the older brother of one of Nick's high school buddies. When so many of us were lining up for the security and comfort of the "corporate" world Nick was not. I truly admired his entrepreneurial spirit and quest for something bigger, better and different. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

How could this happen to such a great guy? We just got their Christmas card the weekend before the crash - Unbelievable. Nick was such a great guy - I only met Ann once, but they were so sweet together, and clearly very happy and involved in their community. May God bless their soulds.
